Immigration Project Attorney

The Immigration Project Attorney will work with the Nebraska Coalition’s established legal team and the member programs in rural communities across Nebraska to provide legal representation to victims in need of legal immigration services. The Immigration Project Attorney will be responsible to assist immigrant survivors of domestic and sexual violence file for federal humanitarian relief. This will include assisting with VAWA Self-Petitions, U and T Visas, and related applications.

Salary: $55,000

Principal Duties:

  • Provide direct legal services to survivors as permitted through the Coalition’s approved projects.
  • Enhance the safety planning and support services available through member programs as a collaborative effort to support survivors.
  • Assist the legal team in responding to information requests from program advocates on immigration issues, including providing assistance on specific cases.
  • Assist the legal team with trainings for victim advocates, law enforcement, attorneys, and other service providers.
  • Assist with data collection, grant reporting, and grant writing.

 

Qualifications:

  • Possess a Juris Doctorate Degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law, in good standing with the licensing body, and eligible for admission into the Nebraska bar.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and stalking issues, as well as Nebraska/Federal law in these areas.
  • Clear and concise writing skills and experience in the development of legal theories.
  • Ability to manage projects and be self-directed.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Experience with federal immigration law

Immigration Project Attorney Job Description

PREA Advocacy Coordinator

The PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) Advocacy Coordinator is responsible for providing advocacy to survivors of sexual assault who are incarcerated within the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) through in-person visits, support groups, postal mail, and email.  Additional duties will include creating and distributing informational materials for incarcerated survivors; overseeing hotline activities, and responding to requests for information from survivors; supervising contracted advocates to assist in answering the hotline calls from survivors who are incarcerated; and providing training for NDCS staff, members of domestic violence/sexual assault programs staff, and contracted hotline advocates. The work of the PREA Advocacy Coordinator is based upon a strong anti-oppression framework, incorporating primary prevention strategies, grass-roots activism, cultural humility, social change, and social justice into all efforts.

Principal Duties:

  • Maintain Access to Supportive Services for Survivors of Sexual Assault who are Incarcerated
  • Develop and distribute informational materials for survivors of sexual assault who are incarcerated as well as public awareness materials for statewide distribution
  • Coordinate a statewide hotline for survivors of sexual assault who are incarcerated, and respond to requests for confidential advocacy
  •  Provide advocacy for survivors of sexual assault who are incarcerated in the ten facilities of Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) through postal mail, email, in-person visits and support group
  •  Assist local programs in identifying systematic improvements to ensure survivors of sexual assault in detention facilities can safely access resources
  • Provide training for member program staff, hotline line advocates, and NDCS staff

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience in grassroots organizing and social change work, with an in depth understanding of primary prevention through a strong anti-oppression lens.
  •  Demonstrated knowledge of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and stalking issues and experience working with survivors.
  •  Experience working with individuals who have been incarcerated is preferred, but not required.
  • Background checks will be completed.  Applicants must be able to pass the security checks for the Nebraska Department of Corrections.
  •  This position involves multiple and diverse duties:  direct services to survivors, oversight of service delivery, policy development, creating and delivering training and statewide leadership.  Travel both inside and outside of the state will be required.

Youth Engagement Coordinator

The Youth Engagement Coordinator will work to elevate youth voices throughout the larger work of the Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence. This position will be empowered to coordinate opportunities for young people to engage in intersectional activism that furthers the Coalition's mission.

The Youth Engagement Coordinator will also work in tandem with the Community Engagement Coordinator to plan, coordinate, and manage the Youth Empowerment Project. The goal of this position is to integrate youth voice into the larger social justice movements occurring within our society through organizing, education, and activism. Additional projects that meet this goal could also be assigned as necessary.

We welcome high school and college students to apply for this position. There is a minimum commitment of one semester beginning January of 2020 with extension of employment to be reviewed.
